Truss to Truss and Truss to Girder Hangers

Truss to Truss and Truss to Girder Hangers

I don't own an IBC book because I design only residential - but I design everything nonetheless.

If anyone has access to a relatively recent IBC, please look up any verbiage about who is responsible for those hangers - is it mentioned at all?

Is it the Struct EOR, or the Truss Mfr?

I am not talking about truss to ledger hangers - I do agree that is for the EOR.

RE: Truss to Truss and Truss to Girder Hangers

AELLC -
check this site out for public domain copies of building codes (IBC)
https://law.resource.org/pub/us/code/bsc.ca.gov/

Also - I don't believe that the IBC actually dictates who does what. (I may be wrong).
But we had a past thread here once that discussed the breakdown of truss mfr. vs. EOR.

Here's the thread: thread507-166533: Lateral Wind Loads - Residential Construction

And here's a direct link to the Nevada state board newsletter that discusses this.
Scroll down to page 6 of this link: http://www.nvboe.org/wp-content/NLs/NL-0704.pdf

JAE-

Thanks, that last link to the Nevada newsletter was especially useful. I am going to see if my scanner can do that OCR thing it is supposed to, and add my comments.

BTW -
I used to work in Las Vegas. During an expedited plans review at the Bldg Dept there, I left my lunch in a brown paper bag there, in one of their office refrigerators. Someone else took me out to lunch and I forgot to retrieve it.

About 1-1/2 years later, I had since moved to the Phoenix area, and was visiting LV one day to answer some plans review comments. I opened the same fridge out of curiosity, and wow, it was till there.

True Story.

RE: Truss to Truss and Truss to Girder Hangers

I don't live there - just had a project there once and got licensed there.

Did you eat the lunch?

It was really green - at least no one called the bomb squad. (This was way before all this terrorist stuff)

RE: Truss to Truss and Truss to Girder Hangers

ANSI/TPI 1-2007 - The National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction - Specifies that the truss designer is responsible for specifying truss to truss connections.

Truss or truss-girder to beam though, that's you.

Not in Maricopa County, AZ , Mike

RE: Truss to Truss and Truss to Girder Hangers

So you have to communicate to the truss designer your structure so he can detail to it?

Mike,

It's a long and gory saga - I am still trying to sort it out w/ the Plans Check & the truss mfr's

Right now, all Struct EOR's need to calculate and show the hangers on our framing plans - grrr

RE: Truss to Truss and Truss to Girder Hangers

Getting truss info is like pulling teeth. I get impression I need some sort of secret handshake, passcode, special tattoo, or something.

I did get somewhere today - one of the homebuilders I deal with shot off a really blunt email to the truss co., and I got a full set of truss layout and calcs, on paper, for a particularly complex house that is in plans check now.

That is a good start.

The definition of a structural engineer: overdesign by a factor of 1.999, instead of the usual 2.
