Flow through culverts

Flow through culverts

Flow through culverts

(OP)
Basic question here.

I have culverts for drainage water draining gravity flow. The Culverts ends are both submerged. I have a higher head water than tail water elevation, however, the culvert has an adverse slope.

How does this affect the hydraulics? Using Bernoullis, the head differential would allow for flow? Does the adverse flow impede the flow? I am going against gravity through the culverts and would assume that velocity would be slowed down. Any advice will help here.

RE: Flow through culverts

the culvert will flow under pressure and flow rate will be related to your differential head minus friction and entrance losses. the biggest problem with adverse slopes on culverts is sediment which will tend to fill up the pipe. that will reduce the capacity over time
