Design of billboards

Design of billboards

Design of billboards

(OP)
Hi,
Can anyone tell me the name of a book which has got the design for billboards?
I have got one but there is no design for billboards in that.
Thanks

RE: Design of billboards

ASCE makes a good one for the wind load, AISC makes a good one for the steel deisgn. I am not sure there is a book devoted to this.

RE: Design of billboards

There is no book for billboards as such I believe. With those above references, basic engineering is the rest.

I did a couple of those huge casino marquees in Las Vegas without benefit of written procedure.

Smitash,

Engineering Sign Structures: An Introduction to Analysis and Design [Hardcover]
Benjamin Jones (Author)
ISBN-10: 0944094309

This is a nice reference book for typical freestanding sign and marquee design principles, however it is lacking on the technical side. If you're just starting to get into signage design it may a good book to have in your library.

RE: Design of billboards

Smitash,

Do you have drawings of an older project, or ability to go out and observe general arrangement of billboard structure?

RE: Design of billboards

Yeah, when I'm working on something new where I can find examples out in the world I'll generally just go out and take lots of pictures of them and sit down and figure out what other people do.

As far as analysis, it's likely going to be wind driven. For loading I'd look at your local building code as well as your highway/transportation code. Highway departments tend to put up all sorts of signs.

You could try contacting the Outdoor Advertising Association of America. I know they at least used to do/sponser a bit of engineering research and might be able to point you towards billboard specific information if you really want to track it down. I have an old embeded post foundation method that they published.

RE: Design of billboards

The overturning load on the casino marquee footing was so large that we provided a huge mat foundation. I don't have any idea what a highway billboard for example will be like.

Smitash:
There have been a couple other threads on this general topic, one within the last few weeks, namely, thread256-359373: Sign Foundation, in the Foundation Engineering forum. Search the general subject.
