Horizontal tappings limitations for horizontal vessels as per ASME Section VIII Div. 1

Horizontal tappings limitations for horizontal vessels as per ASME Section VIII Div. 1

Horizontal tappings limitations for horizontal vessels as per ASME Section VIII Div. 1

Hello,

My client claims horizontal tappings for horizontal vessels have fixed limitations as per ASME Section VIII Div. 1 pressure vessel code. The maximum angle for horizontal orientated tappings should not exceed 55 degrees, hence the minimum tapping distance should be 0,1 x diameter of the vessel.

I have gone through the ASME code to th best of my knowledge but could not ffine this requirement.

Can anyone be of help?

Is my client claims justified by the ASME?

Many thanks for prompt response.

Regards,
Geepee11

Hello Mike,

I am talking about the angle limitation of placing an horizontal nozzle on horizontal vessels. As you may know, a lot of manufacturers have issues during fabrication in welding an horizontal nozzle to a cylindrical shell.

Some companies clearly state in their specification to provide radial nozzles to the vessel shell after this angle limitation.

I am just looking for what section of the ASME code states this requirement.

I hope this is more clear for you.

Fully tangential nozzles are permitted in the ASME Code. This is pretty much the opposite of radial nozzles.

Geepee11, if you are talking about fabrication tolerances Code in general does not address these. They are usually addressed in industry standards such as TEMA,HEI and so forth.

Mike
