Part file header is invalid error NX9

Part file header is invalid error NX9

Part file header is invalid error NX9

(OP)
Hi,

New to NX in 2014, working in an environment where we just updated to NX9 but most of our vaulted (read only) parts are saved in the NX6 format. I have a problem loading one sub-assembly part within an assembly that contains many legacy parts. When opening the sub-assembly part, I get the following message:

Warnings while opening <p/n>_mm.
The following warnings were issued while loading.

x:<path><p/n>_mm.prt - Part file header is invalid.

The sub-assembly part will not load, but I can see the preview for it when I highlight the part in the assembly navigator. The sub-assembly was generated by copying a legacy part created in NX6, and it contains a number of legacy parts. I was using it yesterday, and I used the save command before closing out (saving work part and modified components).

I've spoken with some coworkers who recommend that I do not allow multiple windows to be open at once. Yesterday, I had about 10 windows open, and the save operation took about 15 minutes yesterday at the end of the day.

Is there any way to repair a file like this that won't open? What are the recommended work practices to prevent this? It's the second time I've seen this error. Last time it wasn't complicated, so I just remade the part, but now I want to figure out how to avoid the rework.

Thanks,

RE: Part file header is invalid error NX9

I'd suggest contacting GTAC, they may have the tools to diagnose/repair your file.

I'm a bit unclear on what you mean by "I had about 10 windows open...". Do you mean that you had 10 parts open (they show up in the "window" menu), or that you had 10 sessions of NX open simultaneously?

Having 10 parts open should not present a problem. Having 10 sessions of NX running is, at the very least, a confusing way to work. If you had the same parts open in multiple sessions, and saved them; I'd not be surprised if some odd behavior started to manifest...

Thanks for the response cowski. I ended up remaking the part already, so my immediate problem is solved. By 10 windows I meant there were 10 parts which were opened as display parts in the same NX session, such that the "window" dropdown above the ribbon had 10 display parts available. My coworkers have recommended that I should save and close display parts more often so that I have less items which need to be touched during a save all operation. There is always the possibility that this is important at my office specifically because of quirks with our server and lack of PDM system.

If it happens again I'll look to GTAC.

RE: Part file header is invalid error NX9

Save All by itself can cause issues, but even more so with 10 open files. It will try to save all modified files in all of the opened files. The only time I recommend having that many open files is if you are doing a mass substitution of a component part. The other probelm with Save All is that it will try to save all of your read-only parts.
