good morning,
I have received some samples of Bestar BE2519 flat stock. The material is 1/16" x 1 1/2" and is being evaluated for use as a fine slicing blade. Composition is
C: 1.10
Si: 0.25
Mn: 0.3
Cr: 1.20
V: 0.20
W: 1.30
For heat treat I was thinking, heat to 800C, 5 minute soak, quench in warm(120F)12 second oil. Temper for 1 hour at 350F for final hardness of Rc63-65.
This is our first time using this material. Any and all comments and suggestions welcome.

Your proposed austenitizing temperature is the lower limit shown by the supplier. Five minutes is short, will you only be heating one small part at a time? How do you introduce the part into the furnace? You may not fully austenitize in five minutes. Your proposed quenchant temperature may lead to distortion, is your blade sensitive to distortion?

right now we are making small prototypes, parts will be 1/16 x 1 1/2" x 8". we will heat treat one part at a time in a small muffle furnace. thought was pre-heat furnace to 1200F, add part, heat to 1475F, once part is at temp, soak for 5 minutes then quench. Quenchant temperature is based on supplier's data sheet. hopefully there will be no distortion on quench. that is one of the questions we are trying to answer. the temperatures and times i listed are our starting point. will do sample with 5,7 and 10 minute soak, then samples at 1500F and 1525F.

825-830C is the common practice. How do you propose handling such small pieces. Take care that during heating and quenching, the pieces do not overlap.

so we will do samples at 800C and 825C. I have previously worked at a warm form facility, so i am aware of the hazards of handling hot metal. we are doing the parts one at a time so that overlap is not an issue.
