Transferring Braced Frame Shear thru Column Embedment at a Slab Edge with a Blockout
Transferring Braced Frame Shear thru Column Embedment at a Slab Edge with a Blockout
(OP)
I have a situation where I want to transfer 70 kips of shear force through column embedment into an 8" ground floor structural slab. If this were an interior column, I would check bearing on the steel-concrete interface and call it day. However with this being at the edge and knowing the the contractor will want to use blockouts in this slab, I am wondering if there is any other sort of failure mechanism that should be considered.
Could there be a side breakout that would occur in the slab similar to the check done on anchors for shear load parallel to a concrete edge in ACI Appendix D? And what effect would the presence of the blockout have on the capacity?
I have attached a sketch to help illustrate.
