48" Steel Pipe Hot Tap

48" Steel Pipe Hot Tap

(OP)
We need to make a new 48” tie-in on an existing above ground 66” 3/4 inch thick steel pipe. The piping is for process air blower intake which the air is roughly at atmospheric temperature and a slight vacuum of 14” WC. The appropriate connection (to maintain plant operations) is to weld a new branch to the host pipe and tap it via a welded tapping fitting. I’m familiar with the ASME B31.1 power piping code and AWWA M11 as I’ve done this before on pipe this large. However, this situation is a little more complicated due to the location of the tap, a 30” wye connection exists at the 9:00 position (rotated 135 degress from the proposed tap centerline location). The design of the 48” tap would be a collar reinforcement as defined by AWWA M11; however, my question is, how do I account for the existing hole in the pipe?

RE: 48" Steel Pipe Hot Tap

I'll leave the calc issues to others...

How much does the valve, machine, and cutter bit weigh? And how are you supporting it?
