Surface Texture / Lay Direction on Clyndrical Surfaces

Surface Texture / Lay Direction on Clyndrical Surfaces

Surface Texture / Lay Direction on Clyndrical Surfaces

Does it may any sense to request a circular lay on a cylindrical feature produced using a common lathe operation?

The lay looks perpendicular to the view plane when looking at a section. And conversely, the lay looks parallel when looking down along the axis of the feature.

Am I mistaken? Or is there be a reason to request a circular lay on a cylindrical surface (OD or ID) when the end application is a static o-ring seal? Is there even a way to create a circular lay on a cylinder with conventional machining techniques?

RE: Surface Texture / Lay Direction on Clyndrical Surfaces

I think it is incorrect to specify (and impossible to produce) circular lay on a turned cylindrical shaft. I always specify perpendicular lay in a view of the shaft profile because I want them to trace in the direction of the axis (across the lay). For static o-ring seals (we do millions of them a year) you do want the lay to run the same direction as the o-ring.

Thank you for your response. It seems obvious, but I wanted a sanity check just in case.

Other opinions are still welcome, of course, as I'm happy to avoid confirmation bias whenever possible. ;)
