VERTICAL UPTHRUST

VERTICAL UPTHRUST

VERTICAL UPTHRUST

(OP)
Our shop is repairing a 100 hp Westinghouse vertical motor, 360TP frame, 3560 rpm motor. The motor has been placed on an existing two stage deep well pump. The motor was originally setup for a continous down thrust load. Upon being placed in the application the customer has found that the motor is over engineered for the application. While that motor is running the pump, the pump system has periods that salt is introduced and causes a loading in the system.

The upthrust is causing an axial load on the ball bearing used for the guide bearing. This is causing enough heat to burn the grease and cause damage to the bearings. The thrust bearing is an angular contact ball.

We are going to change the bearing to a "QJ" bearing, that will receive a thrust load in both directions. The housing has four bolt which would accommodate a bearing cap.

Do we need the bearing cap to allow the "QJ" bearing to take up the up thrust, and not allow the thrust to be placed on the quide bearing.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!

RE: VERTICAL UPTHRUST

I had a similar problem with a 75hp vertical motor, See thread 237-34768 Before making any modifications to the motor, inspect the pump and make sure all is within specification for the application. Again, I would also check with mfg engineering dept on any modifications before proceeding and get their blessing.

Kind Regards
