Welding Tables

(OP)
Does anyone have a means of calculating the 'C' coefficient in the AISC welding tables given a 'k' value and an 'a' value? Is there a general means or shortcut other than doing the actual calculations.

RE: Welding Tables

As far as I know, there are no real "shortcuts" when it comes to calculating the coefficient C for bolts or weld groups. I spent two days writing a spreadsheet to calculate it for situations not addressed in the AISC design charts. It was a major PITA, due to calculating the instantaneous center of rotation of a bolt group. My spreadsheet is still a little incomplete though as I haven't figured a good way to do it without using Solver. Maybe if my Excel programming skills were a little better, I would have been able to make it work a little better.

RE: Welding Tables

There's a spreadsheet at Steeltools.org where you can calculate the forces on a weld group of any shape without using the tables. It's currently only in ASD, but a very useful tool in a pinch.
