I'm attempting to design an implant that must spring back. I tried titanium but it bends and will not return to its original form. any help with safe materials that will spring back? or treating?
its a small part .015 thick at the spring area.

RE: need help with material choice

I'm not sure how I should take someone who claims to be working on what he calls an 'implant' while asking seemingly important design questions in a forum dedicated to 'hobbies'. Makes one wonder exactly what your 'hobby' might entail...

RE: need help with material choice

You don't give much information.

Have you calculated the stress your 'implant' will see?

Have you compared that to the yield stress of relevant grades of titanium?

Have you discussed heat treat processes etc. for the springs with your vendor?

RE: need help with material choice

CEMENTHE4D,

If it does not spring back, you have loaded it plastically. If you are designing a spring that must deform a large distance elastically, titanium and beryllium copper are just about the best materials you can select.

There are forums for structure, mechanical engineering and for springs. You must have quite a hobby.

If, as I suspect, you are 'designing' by means of cut and try, I suggest you learn how to design with steel springs before graduating to materials that are more expensive to discard.

Thanks for the input.
I ended up using PEEK instead. springs right back for what I need.
