Translation issue possible?

Translation issue possible?

Translation issue possible?

(OP)
I have a machining issue going on. The surface being supplied to our 3/5 Axis department looks like picture 1 and is coming out of Catia V5 as an iges or step file yet after machining the surface doesn't look the same see picture 2.

RE: Translation issue possible?

Not seeing picture1

HGMorgan,

I am new to this and I wasn't sure how to add multiple attachments to a thread so I created a PPT with all the pictures in it. I hope it helps, and again the issue is the difference in the surfaces between the CAD data (slide 2) and the actural machined surface (slide 3).

RE: Translation issue possible?

I'm not sure they are different. Has there been a check of the machined surface, I.E., a CMM check back to the model?
The CAD model is showing isoparm lines. That is normally an indication of a contoured (non-flat) surface.
You would not see those exact lines on a machined surface, except if there were sharp peak edges @ those lines.
The lines on the machined part are from the CNC cutting tool, probably a small ball mill.
A ball mill will leave scallops on the surface that have to be sanded out, leaving a smooth finish.
Translations could and did fail in the early days.
I haven't seen a failed translation from CAD to CAM for decades.
A CMM check will show if the surface is with-in tolerance.
