NX model from point cloud

NX model from point cloud

NX model from point cloud

(OP)
Hello Everyone,

I am new to NX. My requirement is to create a solid model from point cloud data. I am importing point data through a GRIP code. Then i am trying to fit surface on this data but results are not very convincing. I don't know much about the parameterization options. What value of U and V should be picked?

I usually work in Matlab. So i am getting surface data of the model which i intend to create. If not 'Fit Surface', then is there any other option i can use to get a final model? One attempt for sphere is attached.

Any advice will be helpful.

Regards

RE: NX model from point cloud

I hope not it's a sphere that will be your final model smile...- If so there is a Fit-Sphere feature in the dialog.
Anyhow, in this case you have a cloud on both sides of the surface, when fitting / wrapping, NX will be "confused" since the points are on both sides of the face. thereby the waffle shape. If you would try fit to only the upper or lower half of the cloud you will get more logical results.
The Fit surface will also create a sheet that's supposed to match the cloud, you will need to be very lucky if this gives you the desired shape at first attempt...
Instead , create a sheet that is likely , in shape, to be able to match to the cloud, then use Refit Face - Fit to target.
If the surface then is on one side of the cloud, there is a Max checking distance option that can be used to limit the matching distance, I.e ignore the other side of the cloud. ( -It is still better to divide the cloud into smaller , shape-logical , clouds. )
Many times a repeated process also gives the better results, i.e create a surface that will be wrapped, wrap-apply, wrap -apply, wrap-apply etc.
where each wrap shapes the surface such that the next wrap feature has better input shape. You will need to trial and error the degree and patches.
If you are to export the resulting surface, note that not all systems can handle surfaces with higher degree than 3.

Tomas
