Open channel construction

Open channel construction

Open channel construction

(OP)
Hi guy

I was arguing with my co-worker on constructing a temporary open channel. He is very insisting on use concrete trough for the bottom base of the 8m wide open channl. My stand is, it is a temporary open channel won't last that long, why dont we use cemet or epoxy reisn spread over the channel wall and get over it? Is there any advantage what he insist of for open channel design?

RE: Open channel construction

If it is a temporary condition, why not use something salvagable like riprap or articulated blocks. If there is a need on the final project then a little addition cost in labor may offset the labor required to salvage it.

RE: Open channel construction

without any supporting information on the design of this channel, how do you expect anybody to answer this question?

while riprap is salvagable in theory, my experience is that is is just about as costly to salvage it as it is to place it in the first place. mattress on the other hand is may be a bit easier to salvage.

RE: Open channel construction

Interesting question. Here are my 2 cents worth of contribution:

$0.01 - To determine the materials for this channel, answer the following 2 questions: How temporary is temporary - 1 week? 2 months? 5 years? And how significant are the implications of some sort of channel failure? Perhaps you can even get statistical/more quantifiable numbers by introducing recurrence intervals into the discussion.

$0.02 - An alternate material to riprap or articulated blocks may be a turf reinforcement mat - they have different grades of these based on your anticipated maximum velocity (which gets back to the ending part of my first thought).

Good Luck!
