440A stainless alternatives

440A stainless alternatives

Is anybody familiar with acceptable alternatives to 440A stainless round bar? We use it in several high pressure applications and the material is becoming very hard to find.

Alternatively, Is anyone familiar with sources for this material?

Thanks

RE: 440A stainless alternatives

Which properties lead you t use 440A in the first place?
What strength and corrosion levels are you looking for?

RE: 440A stainless alternatives

440C is readily available but since you gave no requirements it is impossible to say if it is an acceptable replacement.

Thanks for the feedback so far. A problem is these parts have been like this for years and we have no data on the history behind them. So to start with , I was just trying to find something that had similar properties to 440A and go from there. We have tested 440C and it becomes too brittle after heat treat in our cyclical high pressure application.

RE: 440A stainless alternatives

Did you test 440C with a higher anneal temp? You can match the lower properties.
What strength level do you use the 440A? Do you know what temper temp and hardness you are using?

There are other martensitic alloys out there.
If you want similar strength and corrosion resistance I would start with 425mod, 455, 420F, or 431.
Good luck.
