Real world synchrophasor uses

Real world synchrophasor uses

Real world synchrophasor uses

(OP)
I've been doing a lot of reading about synchrophasors lately. I'm finding a lot of promises about what the technology "can" or "will" do, but little in terms of real world installations and uses.

Can anyone point me to a real world installation where synchrophasor data is actually being used, preferably in real time operations?

Thanks

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

BC Hydro a utility as part of WECC uses synchrophasor data as part of their system disturbance action scheme to adjust for generation/load balance to manage various transmission line loading during transmission line trips or generation trips as well as provide real time data.

I think there a requirement as part of WECC reliability issues and may also be some white papers at the WECC web site if the various utilities that have instituted it.

Hope that give you a start anyway.

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

Advanced Energy is using synchrophasor technology in its inverters to detect an islanded condition in the SEGIS project. They tested a couple of island detection algorithms based on synchrophasor measurements.

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

If you visit the selinc.com *SEL Relays* site, you will find several application guides (6341 & 6337). A real world application I find interesting are the ability to check real time voltage and current. Considering NERC requirements for verification of instrument transformer testing, this may eliminate costly outages for testing in the same way that relay alarms have been accepted.

Thanks all!

There is some good stuff in those documents from SEL.

I couldn't find anything specific on BC Hydro... It looks like most of WECC is in the same place as PJM, MISO and others - having data but not really using it for anything other than academic exercises yet.

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

this system allows you to measure the exact impedance of a transmission line. Manufacturer has already including synchrophasor measurement as an integral part of digital disturbance recorders.

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

Since the line relays include PMU capability, why install a separate disturbance recorder?

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

A decade ago, synchronous phasor measurement capabilities were available only in stand-alone instruments, called phasor-measurement units (PMUs). Subsequently, SEL introduced synchrophasors into its protective relays, as a standard capability. Today, synchrophasors are available in protective relays, meters, and recorders as well as in PMUs.

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

At one point, not all that long ago, the DFR/DDR had a definite value and a real place in fault analysis. Now I think they're just a waste money and space. That buggy whip has succumbed to improvements in relay technology. Today I see money spent on a DFR as money that could have bought more value buying better relays.

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

My utility uses something called an 'Avistar Trakker' to perform phase checks on new or reconfigured equipment before parallel is made; one of the sine qua non features of this equipment is that the satellite clock link has to be operational...

Reading between the lines, this sounds to me like a synchrophasor / PMU application; but are the two terms synonymous?

RE: Real world synchrophasor uses

I guess DFR/DDR has yet a place in fault analysis. They are valuable technical data to resolve dispute between independent producers and utilities in case of blackout.
PowerPlants have been installed DFR in both place: power house and substation.
