Very Long Supports for LCD screens
Very Long Supports for LCD screens
(OP)
Can someone tip me on what kind of horizontal loads should I consider if I want to design a very long (about 4.50 meters long) support to hang a LCD screen from a ceiling.. It's inside a building with wide open interior spaces..

RE: Very Long Supports for LCD screens
Or do you mean earthquake loads? Again, solve directly using mechanics and your code.
RE: Very Long Supports for LCD screens
not earthquake loads, no problem with that here..
i would call it an occasional wind load inside of buildings or something like that.. i use the eurocode, maybe i don't know the code that well, but i couldn't find anything there..
i'm looking for criteria to choose a diameter for a tubular section.. some horizontal force acting on the screen that causes bending moments on the tube.. do you know what i mean?

now i have a notion of the kind of loads to use.. i'll check that reference closely and finally decide on the load to consider..

Could somebody use it to do chin-ups? Are there fork lifts in the building?
If your structure fails, what or who will the TV land on?

RE: Very Long Supports for LCD screens
I've seen gross violations of this restriction, however it is not the designer's fault if someone uses a ladder or their buddy to reach the TV support. It is the designer's fault to allow something low enough to climb at all.
RE: Very Long Supports for LCD screens
Didn't codes in the past reference minimum internal lateral loads of 10 PSF? I'd probably start there while considering possible larger future screens and see how I liked the results.
RE: Very Long Supports for LCD screens
Yes, 2kPa is absolute overkill, but why try to engineer this to the nines? This is not a fridge, and you don't want anything going wrong for the sake of a couple of hundred dollars (max).
We might not agree on this one, but I would *not* be sticking my neck out for a frigging TV stand.
