Hi guys,
I am using ANSYS to analyze a involute spline connection. An engine dyno with a male spline shaft is being attached to an engine through a internal spline adapter. I know this is somewhat vague, but is it wise to assume the plane stress condition and use a 2-D analysis? I haven't found a lot of information on analyzing spline connections in general. The only real hand calcs I have found is from the machinery's handbook. I wasn't sure if a simplifying this to a 2-D problem was a good assumption or not.

I have recently been analyzing hub-shaft torque transmission: interface pressure varies along shaft length
which precludes 2D analysis. I could dig out some references if you care to look this up.

There is an excellent Master's Thesis by Justin Paul McGrath that you should be able
to find if you Google
"Analysis of Axial Load Distribution in a Spline Coupling".
It has additional references cited also.
I would attach a PDF but I am uneasy about distributing copyrighted work. You should have no trouble
finding the paper and downloading it.
