Journal Extract Points From Face

Journal Extract Points From Face

Journal Extract Points From Face

(OP)
I am looking for a method to extract points(.001" spacing between points) from all visible faces in the work view and export them to a text file. Even if anyone have a journal that can extract points from a single face, that would give me a good place to start.

RE: Journal Extract Points From Face

I need to ask of what use is such data? For one square inch of a face you are suggesting 100000 x, y anz z values. Before considering producing a journal for such data can I suggest you indicate how you would use such point data. NX faces can be checked for face type and then far less data is required. For example if you had a planar face then edge information and three points is all that is required. If the face belong to a dumb solid then it is still possible to use far less points to get sufficient face data. To determine if a face is planar use a number additional points and test both distance and curvature would give the info so that again the edge info and three points is all that is required. Similar reduced data is required for cylindrical, conic and spherical faces. For general B surface I would suggest fundamental B surface creation data or constant u and v data.

NxJournaling was able to create a demo point set journal here(Link). I am attempting to put a journal together to analyze the complexity of machining for large parts. The direction I am leaning towards currently is extracting a point set from the faces and creating custom algorithms to analyze and find complex locations on these parts. We have tight tolerances and this is why I need such tight spacing between points.

I was able to retrofit the demo journal and apply it to all the faces on a body, and now I am working on a method for finding areas of complexity and the best method in which to machine them. I had no idea how to being analyzing this within NX so my thought was to use a data set and analyze that instead.

RE: Journal Extract Points From Face

Can I suggest you consider using a faceted model in NX. Facets can be used to get considerably more information then points. One can cycle through the facets for each face. A range of facet information is available such facet normal, facet edge and facet vertex convexity.
