"Roof Rafters"

"Roof Rafters"

"Roof Rafters"

(OP)
I keep seeing rafters called out as "Roof Rafters" on many Arch. and Structural plans. Is there another type of rafter that is not intended for roof framing? Seems kind of redundant.

RE: "Roof Rafters"

I've heard people call off ceiling rafters instead of ceiling joists. So maybe they're just ignorant. Those are the same people that call all columns "Jacks" or "Coliums" (Pronounced Coli - ums, might be a Southern Manitoba thing)

RE: "Roof Rafters"

"Coliums" is good. I like "columbs" and then, of course, "glulambs"

RE: "Roof Rafters"

I could be using the wrong terminology, but I always think of a rafter as a "ladder" type member with vertical support only at one end (bottom) and a joist as a "beam" type member with support on both ends.

RE: "Roof Rafters"

My favourite has always been "Culombs"; Saw that one in my first job after university... Couldn't stop chuckling for days...

RE: "Roof Rafters"

ExcelEngineering:
Are “de-icing slats” anything like “roof rafters” when they “dissolve?” Or, do they all turn into coluuuumns or chimoolies when they dissolve. They could probably all be made out of masonairy, and the calvary could ride in and save the day. smile

RE: "Roof Rafters"

I guess that depends if they were used in a Nucular reactor..

RE: "Roof Rafters"

Is a "colium" anything like a "colyum"- used to hear one guy say it like that.

And on the original post- yeah, a lot of language doesn't make sense.

RE: "Roof Rafters"

don't forget rebarb and joistses
