Afternoon,

Hoping for some advice on the following as it is my first time dealing with ASME I and boilers:

My client has a boiler and steam drum on site that was designed and built in 1968/1969. It is a piggy-back configuration with the steam drum on the top connected to the boiler at the bottom via NPS 3 pipes. The information available for this equipment is very limited. The steam side was designed to ASME I and the vestibules/channels to ASME VIII div.1. Code databook is no longer available of either equipment.

To which code need the calculations be done to determine the minimum thickness of the tubesheets? As far as I could determine ASME I does not have tubesheet calculations and the configuration fall outside the scope of ASME VIII. Can AD Merkblatt be considered to perform the calculations with or an FEA?

It was built by Erie City Iron Works in the USA for a project done by Fluor. I tried to load a picture but was not successful. Wil try again shortly.

Description doesn't make clear if this is a watertube or firetube boiler...

The firetube boilers I'm familiar with have more or less flat tube sheets at the ends, so I'm having a difficult time trying to visualize the unit's configuration.

The watertube boilers I've seen have the tubes rolled into the cylindrical portions of the mud and steam drums; as such these boilers don't have tube sheets per se...

Not only that, the boiler and steam drum are not describeed as being connected with tubes, but with pipes...
