Procedure Qualification Record for Glued Joints

Procedure Qualification Record for Glued Joints

(OP)
A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a formal written document describing welding procedures, which provides direction to the welder or welding operators for making sound and quality production welds as per the code requirements . The purpose of the document is to guide welders to the accepted procedures so that repeatable and trusted welding techniques are used. A WPS is developed for each material alloy and for each welding type used. Specific codes and/or engineering societies are often the driving force behind the development of a company's WPS. A WPS is supported by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR or WPQR). A PQR is a record of a test weld performed and tested (more rigorously) to ensure that the procedure will produce a good weld. (from WikipediaLink)

If there shall be a PQR to support a WPS, why not such a thing for glued joints (which normally are used to connect non-metallic pipes, such as GRP, together)?

B31.3 has rules regarding qualification of glued joints in nonmetallic pipe. B31.1 also has guidelines for same.

If you want to see examples of qualified procedures for adhesive bonding and surface preparation look to the aerospace industry. With proper procedures aluminum bonds are much stronger than steel.

When it comes to relying on a qualified process in an uncontrolled environment to ensure a high-quality end product, things can get a bit sticky. With regards to welding versus adhesive bonding, there are a couple things to consider. Producing high quality weld joints in pipes in an uncontrolled environment is a process that has a long history and is very well understood. It is also very easy to verify that these welds are sound. With adhesive bonds, the resulting bond quality is far more sensitive to environmental conditions like temperature, humidity and cleanliness. It is also much more difficult to validate the quality of a finished adhesive bond joint.
