Hi,

I'm struggling with finding a suitable method to check the embedment of a pole in post mix concrete in the ground supporting a 2.3w x 1.5h m sign board.

I'm just doing this as a hand calculation. The pole is embedded 1m below ground level surrounded by 0.3m^2 in plan block of concrete and is mainly subject to wind load.
I guess it will be similar to a retaining wall with soil pressure resisting overturning moment.

Or could I simply take the wind load in kN that is applied at the base of the pole and work out the bearing capacity of the pile as a check.

I'm really struggling to find stuff on this so any help would be appreciated

RE: Sign Foundation

Is asphalt paving a suitable material to be considered surface restraint? Even a small concrete pad could be questioned as the mechanism of restraint is relying on friction between the weight of the slab and ground surface and/or passive pressure on any locked in footing around the slab perimeter. Asphalt is a soft material and gets ever softer in the heat of the summer. I would consider this an unrestrained condition. [smile]

RE: Sign Foundation

Lesali..asphalt provides only slightly better resistance than soil and usually is in two thin of a layer to provide any real help. Embed the post with a sufficient concrete surround.
