316 Stainless - Shear strength - Sloppy punch press

316 Stainless - Shear strength - Sloppy punch press

(OP)
Hey everyone, got a question regarding the shear strength of 316 Stainless Steel.
I have a design that utilizes a punch press of sorts. Basically it is a load limiting device that breaks at a certain load.
The loads are quite high and the parts are huge so the shearing "plates" have a radial clearance of .06 inches. FEA shows that bending and shear is going to occur.

I know that 316 work hardens when drawn and that increases the strength, this is sort of a drawing operation until it breaks. I think.
I've heard that all stainless steels have a higher than expected shear strength when punch presses are used.
I need to figure out what is my governing failure mode, to do that I would need to know the ultimate shear strength, and the ultimate tensile strength which corresponds to the amount of cold work done. (I think)

Any help would be appreciated.

RE: 316 Stainless - Shear strength - Sloppy punch press

300 stainless alloys work harden a lot.
In my experience the fore required to shear or punch stainless is about 50% more than for carbon steel of the same gage and strength.
This is discussed at length in some of the metal forming handbooks.
