Face knurling or Form knurling (axial)
Face knurling or Form knurling (axial)
(OP)
I need help defining a face knurl on a drawing. There doesn't seem to be much information on how to convay this information to the machinist. In a standard knurl callout the TPI is needed and a diameter after knurling. On end face knurling what diameter is relative to the TPI? I am just guessing but I think it is the centerline of the round suface.
If you look at Fig 5 on the listed web page this is what I am trying to define on a drawing.

Normally you’d specify type, pitch, length, and diameter before and after (if necessary).
As you apply knurling to the front face, your diameter becomes your length before and after (if necessary).
Search for the websites of companies doing knurling or knurling tools. They will tell you what’s important. For example, face knurl doesn’t cover the entire face, but leaves relief in the center.
Look here for example:

Check out FIGURE 5.
For your reference standard call-out looks like this:
RE: Face knurling or Form knurling (axial)
The callout is something like
Knurl DIN 82 - RAA - 1.6
RAA is the knurl profile and 1.6 is the pitch bewteen peaks. There are loads of profiles defined in the standard, excerpts of which are easily available online.
http://www.floydautomatic.co.uk/pdf/zeus_knurling.... Seems to suggest that to call out a profile on a plane ,in the case of RAA, you add -plane to the end - RAA-plane. The ID and OD of your knurled area presumably would be called out as diameters on your drawing.
I understand that I am bringing a metric solution to an imperial problem however.
