Designing Pressure Vessel for Deflagration

Designing Pressure Vessel for Deflagration

Designing Pressure Vessel for Deflagration

(OP)
Have a pressure vessel to be designed per ASME Section VIII Divison 1 along with explosion containment. I see Nonmandatory Appendix H Guidance to Accommodate Loadings produced by Deflagration and it's reference to NFPA 69 chapter 5. Looks like NFPA 69 2008 Edition would be chapter 13. Appears the reference in Appendix H is out dated. Looking for info from someone with experience with similar design about how to apply Appendix H to the code calc's.

Looks like a MAWP is determined from NFPA 69 and then the code calc would have to say the design had a MAWP equal to or greater than the value from NFPA 69.

Thanks,
Dale

RE: Designing Pressure Vessel for Deflagration

Not sure if it applies to your situation, but older NFPA guidelines specify the design pressure should exceed 50 psig if the vessel is to avoid fragmentation during a "puff" ( trade acronym for a fuel-air explosion)
