2x wood nailers to steel beams

2x wood nailers to steel beams

(OP)
I am using a double 2x P.T. wood nailer to steel beam detail when supporting wood framing on steel. I use a double plate so that common box nails can be used without nailing through to the steel. Does anyone have any good suggestions for connecting the wood nailer to steel? I have used 5/8" bolts at 24" o.c. staggered in the past, but the bolt heads will be in the way if not recessed.

RE: 2x wood nailers to steel beams

If you are attaching one wood plate by itself, you can use powder actuated fasteners by Hilti or similar.  The information I received was they could be driven into a 1/2" thick steel flange.  I wouldn't use them where a plastic hinge was expected in the beam (seismic).

RE: 2x wood nailers to steel beams

We have used the Hilti power fasteners on many projects joining steel with wood lagging.  I only uses one layer of wood (two inches thk) to reduce the bending/hinge effect.  Just specify the stub nails to reduce the interference problem.  See the Hilti web site for spacing.
