Old contact type Starrett hand-held tachometer

(OP)
Hi Guys ! I have recently bought an old Starrett hand-held tachometer, but don't know how to read it,or maybe it is faulty !!!. It is the type that looks like an old carbine gun ! You put the end directly on the centre of the shaft that you want to check the speed of,the read-out centre revolves, but there is the problem.....I don't know how to read it as it does not stop at any point to read it !!!
Can anybody give any advice please ?

Cheers Guys......Dave

Hmmm...

Can't say I'm fanmiliar with the unit, but maybe it has a fixed gear ratio and it is intended to be used in conjunction with a stopwatch to measure the time taken for one sweep of the hand to be completed?

When in doubt, read the manual.

Or it might be this model:

All these old tachometers worked on similar principles. A mechanical counter counted shaft revolutions and a stopwatch kept time. I have one that looks like a dial pressure gage where you press a button (with a long stroke). This reset a needle on a dial and winds the stopwatch inside. When you release the button the stopwatch starts ticking and the needle moves to count revolutions of the spindle, which has a rubber cone to press against a shaft center. After about 5 seconds the stopwatch times out and the needle stops moving. Then you just read the appropriate scale on the dial. With a wheel attachment instead of a cone this instrument will read surface speed in feet per minute. You can sill buy these instruments. http://equipment.stichtco.com/viewitems/hand-tacho...?

I've got an old one that came from my grandfather, I'll have to dig it out and take a look at it.
