IMDG Equivalent Thickness Calculation

IMDG Equivalent Thickness Calculation

IMDG Equivalent Thickness Calculation

(OP)
I am looking for a sample calculation for the IMDG 6.7.2.4.6 equivalent shell thickness calculation for an IMDG tank shell.

I keep running the numbers, and the calculated shell thickness is about 10 times what my minimum specified thickness is.

I am using a T-11 dangerous goods tank, and section 6.7.2.4.2 specifies a 5 mm minimum thickness. I am using SA240-316 SS (30 KSI yield / 75 KSI tensile).

The equation is:

e1 = (21.4 x e0)/(Rm1 x A1)^1/3

e0 = 5mm
Rm1 = 517 N/mm^2
A1 = 40% for 316 Stainless

I am getting an equivalent thickness of 18.094 mm, which seems incredibly high. ASME is only requiring 4mm.

Does anyone have an example calculation using this formula for me to check my results? Something seems off to me. Thank you.
