Monopole - Wind Load

Monopole - Wind Load

Monopole - Wind Load

(OP)
Hi, I got couple questions dealing with a cantilevered monopole sitting on a footing, using ASCE7-10 wind load procedure.
What would be the wind force coefficient, Cf in this case? The pole has a tapered cross-section and is very slender (height to depth ratio of 35 to 60). Is it more like a free-standing wall or chimney/lattice tower? Some of the tabulated values are not available for this slender ratio.
Thanks

RE: Monopole - Wind Load

Poles are like slender chimneys.... I don't know your code, but I don't think any code can dispute that.

RE: Monopole - Wind Load

In the USA you should be referring to AASHTO Standard Specs for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic signals. It will answer all of your questions and then some...

RE: Monopole - Wind Load

Or TIA222-G if this is a cell tower monopole.

RE: Monopole - Wind Load

check guide specification for design of metal flagpoles ANSI/NAAMM FP 1001-07 (still use ASD wind load though). it gives a good idea about the wind load for poles.

RE: Monopole - Wind Load

The practical difference between a flagpole and a "ideal" round cylinder is very, very small: But, pick the one closest to your application.

The flag "load" at the top of a flagpole adds some reserve margin.
