Coordination Studies

Coordination Studies

(OP)
I am new to coordination studies, wondering are there any good resources out there peopel can recommend? I have just started using SKM for the studies, and I feel like the library is very limited, am I missing something? Are there any good tutorial out there for it?

RE: Coordination Studies

I have found the SKM library to be quite large. Ensure you're linked to the correct library. Access "Document", then "PTW Library. Go to wherever you store your library. It will be called "Ptw.lib", and is often in the "Latest Library" folder.

Also call SKM to make sure you have the latest library. If there are devices you don't have, SKM will often already have them made, but will only release them on request.

I think you're correct that you're missing something. The stock library is pretty good.

Well, the library does have some in stock; not sufficient enough though. Any reading materials you can recommend for coordination studies? On SKM, I didn't see a soft starter as one of the components, or do you just use a VFD in place of it?

RE: Coordination Studies

I've not had direct experience for modeling soft starts, so you'll want to check me on this, but if you add a motor you can adjust the TCC Starting Curve. Go to Starter Type and select which you prefer, then modify it as you wish. I don't know that you can model a particular type of soft starter (though I don't know that you can't), but you can adjust the motor starting characteristics to some degree.

I don't have any coordination material specific to SKM. They don't have the best literature, but their support staff is readily available and helpful.

RE: Coordination Studies

Probably shouldn't use a VFD in place of a soft start-two different animals I used CYME in my past and that had a couple types of soft starts as well as VFDs. I'd call SKM as others have suggested, they'll tell you how to model your situation and probably let you know what parts of their libraries you need.

RE: Coordination Studies

A soft starter does not have a TCC - the motor it is controlling does. You can account for the effects of a soft starter by reducing the starting current and increasing the acceleration time.

What else do you find missing from the SKM library?

Thanks everyone for the feedbacks and recommendations. I just think that the SKM library is not adequate compared to ETAP. Another issue I found that is its limited fuse rating in the library (I could not found the right size I wanted).

RE: Coordination Studies

Don't give up just yet. I've had only a few instances where the library didn't have a fuse I needed. Call SKM to make sure you're looking in the right place. High voltage fuses and low voltage fuses are not stored in the same folder, for example.
