dimensions standard ANSI B16.9 cap (inside crown and knuckle radius)

dimensions standard ANSI B16.9 cap (inside crown and knuckle radius)

(OP)
For a heat exchanger I want to use standard ANSI B16.9 caps. (design acc to ASME VIII)
To check the thickness, I need to know the nominal dimensions of these caps.(inside crown and knuckle radius)
And, is it a (semi) eliptical or thorispherical type?

For the detail design of the heat exchanger, we also want to know more about the fabrication tolerances.
Somebody knows more about the acceptable dimensions?

Thank you for your help,
Denny

RE: dimensions standard ANSI B16.9 cap (inside crown and knuckle radius)

(OP)
For DIN 28011 and DIN 28013 I found out the following dimensions:

r = inside knuckle radius
R = inside crown radius
h = Straight flange height
H = total height

DIN 28011
Klöpper bodem, decimal heads acc. (≈torispherical) r = 0,1D
R = D
h ≈ 3,5 x s
H = 0,192D + s + h

DIN 28013
Korbbogen Head 2:1 elliptical
r = 0,154D
R = 0,8D
h ≈ 3 x s
H = 0,251D + s+ h

The ANSI B16.9 looks like the DIN 28013, but I can't find information.
Sombody knows?

RE: dimensions standard ANSI B16.9 cap (inside crown and knuckle radius)

Dennysurf, fittings are rated the same as a section of pipe of the same diameter, thickness and material. As such you do not need to know the cap dimensions. I believe that they are not fully specified in B16.9 anyway.

Mike

RE: dimensions standard ANSI B16.9 cap (inside crown and knuckle radius)

Per UG-44 they are calculated as equivalent size and schedule straight seamless pipe. B16.9 only specifies the thickness at the butt weld end. The profile and crown thickness is up to the manufacturer.

RE: dimensions standard ANSI B16.9 cap (inside crown and knuckle radius)

Hi Rumandcola,
B16.9 does not only specify the thickness at butt welding end. It also gives all required dimensions to form a Cap. Caps shall be ellipsoidal heads and shall conform to ASME BPVC, this is what B16.9 says, please see General Note (b) to Table 10 of ASME B16.9.
Straight flange (or skirt) dimensions are greater for Standard B16.9 caps than usual ellipsoidal heads.
