Mar aging Steel

Mar aging Steel

(OP)
Hi,
does anyone have experience of MARAGING STEEL shinkage during heat treatment?

I understand that it can shrink approx 0.0004" per inch on external diameters. Does the same apply to internal bores and a linear reduction in the actual measured diameter occur, or is it a case where the cubic volume of the material decrease and the measured diameter of an internal bore would effectively;y increase?

Thanks in advance

RE: Mar aging Steel

What specific grade of maraging steel are you referring to? Different grades can have very different heat treated microstructures with corresponding differences in the amount of growth.

RE: Mar aging Steel

In general maraging alloys will experience a volumetric changes when annealed, and an opposite change when they are aged.
These are volumetric changes, either all dimensions increase, or all dimensions decrease.

RE: Mar aging Steel

Patwalsh, you have a common misconception that every engineer should have learned to avoid, as it is a critical concept for problem solving. If there is volumetric shrinkage of a material, all dimensions shrink, including holes. There are some special cases where if the outside diameter is constrained, then a hole may get bigger. Constraints will result in internal stresses in the material.
