Hello, I'm estimating flowrate for a flow orifice on a 1.5" equilibration line that connects a vertical deethanizer reflux pump to the reflux drum that it is pumping out of. During start up this is used to equilibrate the tank and pump so vapor can return to the tank when the reflux travels to the pump.

Is there an equation that is good for estimating this? Operating pressure of the drum is -67 @ 168.4 PSIG. Vapor pressure of liquid is 183.1 psia.

Are you calculating flow across an existing orifice of known bore? In this case the dP across the orifice would be the liquid head difference between reflux drum and pump. The relation (Q=C*A*dP^0.5) is well known, see Crane TP410 and many other references for details of units and calculating the orifice coefficient (C).

If you are sizing an orifice, then the problem becomes more interesting because you must choose a flow.
