Moving objects to different layers in an assembly context

Moving objects to different layers in an assembly context

(OP)
I'm aware of this thread: http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=326603 regarding moving objects between layers in an assembly context. The problem we are struggling with is slightly different.
We want to move an object to a different layer in an assembly context. The object is natively modelled on layer 1, then in the assembly, moved to a different layer depending on the system context, so that different systems can be switched on or off by layering. So far, so good.
However, as we use the master model context for drawings, there is effectively a further parent created for the drawing, and in this assembly context, the layers revert to the original. We need them to be correct in both the drawing context and the model context. Without doing the job twice, is there a way of moving an object to a different layer, such that the parent assembly also recognises the change of layer?

RE: Moving objects to different layers in an assembly context

Re-add the master model (your assembly) into the master model drawing file, and use layer option "ORIGINAL" - that way drawing should see all the same layers as the assembly.

RE: Moving objects to different layers in an assembly context

Instead of just putting the whole assembly on layer 1 in the drawing file, if I've understood that correctly.

ALternatively, you could try arrangements (and suppression by arrangement) which might be better for what you're trying to do?

Hope this helps.

I agree with carlharr, this sounds like a job for Assembly Arrangements.
