Welding Position

Welding Position

Welding Position

(OP)
Dear All,
As per ASME Section IX QW 461.9 if a welder qualifies in plate with 3F position , He also qualifies to weld in pipe having OD more than 610 mm in Flat & Vertical position. My problem is that we have got 1G ( Flat), 2G (Horizontal), 5G & 6G (Multiple)positions mentioned in QW 122. So what is the vertical position with respect to Pipe..???

Thanks in advance

Alok

RE: Welding Position

When you weld circumference in pipe with flat qualification you will have to weld the pipe flat by rotating the pipe, else you will need a different qualification to include vertical and or horizon as required.

RE: Welding Position

For vertical position with respect to pipe, please Figure QW-461.1 and QW-461.2.
Please note that 5G, 3G, or 5F etc are the test positions where those given in the abovementioned figures are production positions.
Flat, vertical, overhead, horizontal are all production positions when referenced in Section IX.

RE: Welding Position

Alok,
If you qualify on 3F fillet as per QW 461.9 it does not qualify you for any groove welds.
3F qualifies you for fillet welding pipe or plate in the F,H,V positions on diameters equal to or greater than 73 mm OD.
F,H,V are production positions but it is basically the same as a 5F test position.
Cheers,
DD

Dear DD,
Sorry, the welder has actually qualified in 3G in plate not in 3F.

Alok

RE: Welding Position

If you look at QW 461.9

Qualification in 3G Plate Qualifies him:

Pipe over 24"OD F & V only
Pipe less than 24" to 2.875" OD F only
I would look at QW461 for limits on the above positions

..and as a subset this also qualifies him for Fillet welds in F,H & V only.

rgds,
