Strip Mall Extension

Strip Mall Extension

Strip Mall Extension

(OP)
I'm designing an extension to an existing strip mall and I'm looking for tips for properly detailing the separation between the new and the existing building.
My question primarily relates to the location where the new slab on grade will abut the existing exterior wall of the mall. Should an expansion joint be provided at this location, or can the slab be cast against the existing wall?

RE: Strip Mall Extension

I would provide isolation material / compressible joint filler against the building.

Although the definition of "expansion" joint can me a lot of things to different people, what I picture as an expansion joint would be overkill here.

RE: Strip Mall Extension

Casting the new grade slab against the existing wall would be my choice unless there is some feature about the existing wall which makes it unwise to do so. A section of the existing wall would be helpful.

Thank you for your responses.
The elevation of the new slab on grade relative to the existing exterior wall has not yet been verified (thus it hasn't been detailed), though I presume it will be cast flush up against the concrete foundation wall.

My thought was to provide a separation between the slab and the wall with a joint filler, though I don't want to add cost if it's unnecessary. Mijowe- why would you provide a joint filler? and BAretired - why do you prefer not?

RE: Strip Mall Extension

At one time I specified 3/8" AIFB (Asphalt Impregnated Fiber Board) around all grade slabs. The cost was not particularly significant, but my boss asked me why I did that. I told him it had always been my understanding that it was good practice. He indicated that in his opinion, it was unnecessary because the slabs would shrink away from the wall or grade beam, leaving a slight gap without the addition of a joint filler. From then on, I quit specifying the joint filler. There were never any problems with it and there have never been any problems without it, so my preference is to do without it.

RE: Strip Mall Extension

you don't want any type of bond to the existing building and the isolation joint will achieve that.

RE: Strip Mall Extension

Just throw some 6 mil poly between the two to prevent a bond. The new slab is going to shrink more than it will ever expand.
