Over Head Door Addition

Over Head Door Addition

Over Head Door Addition

(OP)
Adding an Over Head Door Assembly to a building. HSS columns on either side of the door. Looking for some guidance on how to calculate the shear load on the door and its transfer to adjacent columns and underlying foundation walls.

Help appreciated.

Thanks,

FEM4Structures

RE: Over Head Door Addition

There should be no in-plane shear in the door itself. This load should be taken care of by braced frames, portals, sheathing, etc. Out-of-plane shear loads transfer the the track, which is mounted to a structural element of sorts. In your case it would be the HSS columns. The columns should be designed for the increased out-of-plane load and the base should be designed to transfer wind forces to the base.

@Crackerjack47 - Thanks for a response.

Do you see a reason why I should provide a Foundation Grade Beam between the two columns if the out of plane shear is not alot? Range approximately 4 kips tops.

Thanks,
