Any suggestions or ideas on how to simulate a drop test in abaqus?

Any suggestions or ideas on how to simulate a drop test in abaqus?

(OP)
Hello,

I am working on a research to simulate a drop test of a package box with ceramic saucer inside. I am not proficient in abaqus so I am looking for some suggestions.

Till now, I created a hollow box with 2 mm thickness to represent it as a cardboard box and a disc for a saucer. I have material properties for cardboard and saucer. Then I assembled the model in abaqus such that saucer is touching box at the bottom; this was initial condition.

At the time of fall, I am giving acceleration field to box. Then I have to give constraint to the saucer so that it will be inside the box. Then I am not able to think next steps especially how to simulate the condition of box hitting the

Please give me some suggestions or ideas on how to do this. Thanks.

RE: Any suggestions or ideas on how to simulate a drop test in abaqus?

Hi Andrew,

If you look through the following sections of the documentation you will find some examples of drop tests:

Section 2.3.2 of the "ABAQUS Example Problems Guide" manual
Section 12.11 of the "Getting Started with ABAQUS: Interactive Edition" manual
Section 12.10 of the "Getting Started with ABAQUS: Keywords Edition" manual

Also have a look at the following tech brief:

Hopefully these examples will help you get started.

Good luck,
Dave
