UCS-66 Governing Thickness for PP Groove with a Fillet Reinforcement

UCS-66 Governing Thickness for PP Groove with a Fillet Reinforcement

UCS-66 Governing Thickness for PP Groove with a Fillet Reinforcement

(OP)
I have feet that are to be welded to a pressure vessel. The feet are contructed of plate material and is to be welded to a forged pressure vessel. The weld symbol calls for a partial penetration single-bevel groove weld with a depth of 3/8" with a fillet reinforcement of 3/4". Is the governing thickness for determining impact requirements for the groove weld as stated in UCS-66(a)(1)(-a) or for fillet weld as stated in UCS-66(a)(1)(-b)?

RE: UCS-66 Governing Thickness for PP Groove with a Fillet Reinforcement

newweldeng09, I can't imagine the feet are butt-welded to the vessel, so forget (-a), (-b) will govern. The MDMT for the joint is based on the thinner of the two parts joined. Impact test or exempt the joint members accordingly.

Now for the WELD METAL, see UCS-67.

Regards,

Mike

Thanks for the reply. Just for my own knowledge, if I had groove welds with fillet reinforcements, which par. would govern?

RE: UCS-66 Governing Thickness for PP Groove with a Fillet Reinforcement

It is dependent on the joint configuration. If butt-welded, (a)(1)(a), corner joint (a)(1)(b). See also UCS-66(a), second paragraph, and (a)(1)(d). These concern the joint members only. Again, for weld procedures and weld metal, see UCS-67(a) and etc.

Regards,

Mike
