I am looking for a reference which is VDI 2230 Systematic Calculation of High Duty Bolted Joints, 1986 edition. Page 33. If someone has it, please help. Thanks. I cannot find it on the web. Or, I would like to have some source to show Bolts Shear Strength is 0.62 of the Tensile Strength. Please help to let me know where can I find it.

RE: VDI 2230 Reference Page 33

VDI 2230 can be purchased from Beuth (http://www.beuth.de).  It is not available free-of-charge, as it is copyrighted information.

Thanks for your info. Please advise where can I find the source besides VDI2230 to show bolts shear strength is 0.62 of the tensile stress? Please help on this matter.

Fastener Standards Sixth Edition copyright 1988 by the Industrial Fastener Institute page M-58
" Ultimate shear strength of carbon steel approximates 60 percent of its ultimate tensile strength. And of course, a suitable factor of safety should be applied."

Does this assist you?

8533:  In addition to Paskenell's citation, here are a few more sources, also.  (1)  Barrett, Fastener Design Manual, NASA RP-1228, 1990, http://euler9.tripod.com/fasteners/, p. 21, "In the absence of specific bolt shear strength values, the following approximations for bolt ultimate shear strength Ssu may be used [for one or two bolts in line of force].  For alloy and carbon steel bolts, Ssu = 0.60 Stu, and for stainless steel bolts, Ssu = 0.55 Stu," where Stu = bolt ultimate tensile strength.

(2)  Kulak, et al., Guide to Design Criteria for Bolted and Riveted Joints, 2 ed., Wiley, 1987, pp. 44-50, "For high-strength alloy steel bolts [ISO grades 8.8, 10.9, SAE grades 5, 8], Ssu = 0.62 Stu for one or two bolts in line of force."

(3)  Fisher, "Structural Steel and Steel Connections," 2002, http://www.house.gov/science/hot/wtc/wtc-report/WTC_apndxB.pdf (1.45 MB), p. B-5, Eq. B-3, "Ultimate shear strength of a single [high-strength alloy steel] bolt is Ssu = 0.62 Stu."
