GTAW WPS

GTAW WPS

GTAW WPS

(OP)
I am somewhat confused on writing a WPS for GTAW Stainless 304, this is prequalified right? I am a new CWI and writing my first WPS. Any help or advice would be appreciated,

RE: GTAW WPS

Austy08,
GTAW is not pre-qualified (refer Clause 3.2)
It is an approved process (refer Clause 3.2.2) but requires qualification tests in accordance with Section 4,
Cheers,
DD

RE: GTAW WPS

The first question is, "What s the applicable welding standard?"

If the welding standard is D1.6, and if the conditions of prequalification are met, it can be prequalified.

As a CWI, you are not expected to develop WPSs as per Table 1 in AWS B5.1. It would appear you are reaching beyond scope of what a CWI is expected to do.

Best regards - Al

RE: GTAW WPS

My mistake Al.
Focused on the welding process and not the material. Doooooooooooooooh !!!,
Cheers,
DD

RE: GTAW WPS

Austy08, welcome to the 'Big Leagues' -- most engineers* have no clue how to write and qualify a WPS, and they ASSume that all CWI's do. The first one will be tough, but they get easier with experience. Try to find a CWI that does WPS's, and there are many more of them doing ASME work than API work. Ask around -- most of us have been in your position.

** no, i did not mispell pi$$ant -- look it up, please.
