2-way FSI with ANSYS WB (using Shell)

2-way FSI with ANSYS WB (using Shell)

(OP)
Hello there!
My first post here so be kind =)
Using Student Version ANSYS 14.5
Windows 7 64

I am trying to do a 2-way FSI in ANSYS workbench using "SHELL281" elements. It is a combined mechanical transient and FLUENT analysis.

For now the structure is a simple 0.1x0.1m steel paddle (2.5mm thick) in the center of a cylindrical flow stream that has an inlet of about 5m/s of air (slightly turbulent). I have successfully done this using a 3D paddle (brick elements) and the deflection and flow field look reasonable. When I use a shell model (with the shadow zone), I get odd flow performance. I couple the FLUENT force and send it to the mechanical, then I couple the displacement from the mechanical to the FLUENT (2 of them, both wall and shadow zone). The stream lines that result are non zero at the paddle face front and back. I have dynamic meshing on which is working and the mesh, I believe, is fine enough at the paddle interface. Deflection for the 3D and shell model is roughly the same.

Does ANSYS 14.5 support 2-way FSI with shell elements? I cannot find a tutorial or YouTube video that does this.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks for your time.
