Pickling and passivation of 304 stainless steel drums

Pickling and passivation of 304 stainless steel drums

(OP)
Dear all,

I am asking vendors to bid on several 304 SS drums with pickling and passivation. I got one bidder refuse to provide pickling and passivation with the following reason.

Quote "Pickling and passivating is done on A-403 stainless fittings. It is not done on Sect.VIII pressure vessels. We would be happy to work with you toward satisfying your metallurgical concerns on certain internal surfaces. Let's begin a dialog and discuss your concerns.” Further, if you know of service companies that can pickle and passivate whole vessels as large as 144”ID x 36’ T/T, we would like to be aware of them, so please share their identities with us." Unquote.

Is it correct from the above statement there is no need to pickle and passivate ?
(I have other bidder who has no problem of doing so by sub-contracting the work out)

RE: Pickling and passivation of 304 stainless steel drums

Pickling and passivation is between the customer and supplier. General boiler subcontracts the service. The supplier you mention should find a capable company and bid the job. Its a hassle to deal with pickling and passivation since the fabricator has to do some of the preparation and it is expensive. No problem to perform on 304 316's materials. Genb

RE: Pickling and passivation of 304 stainless steel drums

I have seen pickling and passivation on many 304 and/or 316ss pressure vessels and heat exchangers (as requested by the customer). Some done in-house and others performed by a contractor.

RE: Pickling and passivation of 304 stainless steel drums

It's very common practice to pickle and passivate or even electropolish a 300 series vessel. I see it done all the time within the pharmaceutical and food processing industry. Granted for a vessel of that size, you will need to find a special outfit that can do it. There are a number of outfits in Texas that specialize in large vessels. Here are some resources to start your hunt:

Often op large structures the pickling is just done on the welds. Often a paste a is used for this localized process.
Then the entire unit is passivated, often using a spray system and recirculating the acid.
I have worked with a couple of the guys mentioned above. They know how to do it.
