Wedge brake mod

Wedge brake mod

(OP)
hello there,
I am designing a mod for a port quay crane emergency brake, I wondered if anyone had any ideas on what to make a metal replaceable wear pad out of. It must withstand 1100t compressive load. I am after a few ideas to get me started many thank.

RE: Wedge brake mod

Friction brake components are usually made from a combination of materials that will not gall or smear due to friction. One part such as the disc is made from steel or iron, while the mating part such as the pad is made from a non-metallic like kevlar. The larger disc is made from a metal so that it has a greater capacity to reject the heat energy generated by braking.

Friction brake systems are designed based on their required heat rejection rate, and not on their "compressive load capacity". If you wish to design an emergency brake system for your crane, you need to know the amount and rate of energy the braking system must be capable of absorbing and safely dissipating.

Many thanks for the reply, it uses a half moon shape that sits on the gantry so if the gantry brakes fail in theory the crane tries to lift itself up as it rides up the wedge. Every 20mm I have a 3x3mm groove ground in to reduce on heat transfer, I am also looking into quenching after it had been gas cut for hardening.
