Referring to Design Guide 11, calculating the effective moment of inertia of open web joists - AISC equations use the moment of inertia of the chords (only) of the joist. My question - How are you supposed to know the area of the chords and distance to their centroid when in the design stage (i.e. how am I suppose to know the area, centroid or moment of inertia of the chords in a 30K8)?

Ah, I missed that the deflection given by the SJI equation which uses the span/360 limiting load is actually the moment of inertia of the chord members x 0.85.

I should be able to use that then with the depth of joist in order to solve the rest of the problem.
