Welders 6G and 6GR

Hi Friends,

Welders 6G can be weld Fill and Cap pass of joint 6GR?

RE: Welders 6G and 6GR

When welding to the requirements of AWS D1.1, the 6GR test is required to qualify the welding procedure and the welder that will weld T, K, and Y joints without backing. Since the root is already welded, the welder depositing any subsequent weld metal is welding with backing. Table 4.10 (D1.1:2006) for welder qualification has a footnote that allows the welder welding with backing to be tested using the 6G test with or without backing.

Best regards - Al

RE: Welders 6G and 6GR

Hi Al,
Hope you had a good Xmas with the family.
Would the requirement for the restriction ring not be applicable to all runs - root, fill & cap ?
Would they not be required (by way of a 6GR weld test) to prove they can weld with a restriction thereby simulating the T,K & Y joint for all runs ?
Cheers,
DD

RE: Welders 6G and 6GR

Thanks for the happy tidings. I hope you enjoyed the holiday with your new family as well. It had to be warmer where you are than here in the cold Northeast!

I was thinking along the same lines as you until I read all the footnotes and reviewed the figures they reference. The edition I have on hand in my computer is the 2006 edition of D1.1, but I don't recollect any changes that would affect the table I referenced.

Best regards - Al
