Coke gas for Preheating in a welding procedure

(OP)
One of my vendors wants to preheat using coke gas for a P1 welding procedure. I have never heard of this gas being used for preheating. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using this gas as opposed to natural gas preheating?

RE: Coke gas for Preheating in a welding procedure

Did you ask how they intend to use this gas for preheating? Why do they want to use coke gas?

RE: Coke gas for Preheating in a welding procedure

If the flame is not 'sooty' it is just another fuel gas - albeit one that usually has significant ammounts of carbon monoxide in it. I feel sorry for the welders & fitters, but if it is burned cleanly, it is just another fuel gas.
