AASHTO C11.6.5.1

AASHTO C11.6.5.1

(OP)
I am a new structural engineer…….

AASHTO C11.6.5.1 states “ where a wall supports a bridge structure, the seismic design forces should also include seismic forces transferred from the bridge through bearing supports which do not freely slide, e.g., elastomeric bearings in accordance with article 14.6.3.” Here, is the term “bearing supports which do not freely slide” referring to fixed support or expansion support.

The reason I ask is that I have an abutment with spread footing and I need to check the stability and sliding. I am not sure if I need to include the lateral loads on my bearings since it is expansion support abutment (my bridge is 2-span steel girder and fixed in the pier). Also can anyone know where I can get a good example for abutment design with spread footing?

Thanks

RE: AASHTO C11.6.5.1

If you have expansion bearings then neglect the force. Even if you had fixed bearings you could probably neglect the force as well. The passive pressure should be enough to keep the abutment from sliding; in the other direction you have to provide enough bridgeseat to keep the superstructure from falling off.

Attached is an LRFD steel bridge example. There's a chapter on abutment design.
